Saptarishis & Vedas: Ancient Wisdom Saptarishis are revered as the seven great sages or seers in Hindu mythology who are said to have received divine knowledge directly from the gods . They are considered as the ancient rishis or sages who possessed great wisdom and spiritual insight . The word " Saptarishi " is derived from the Sanskrit words " sapta " meaning " seven " and " rishi " meaning " sage ." According to Hindu scriptures, the names of the seven Saptarishis are Marichi , Atri , Angiras , Pulastya , Pulaha , Kratu , and Vashishtha . They are often depicted as the mind-born sons of Brahma , the creator god in Hinduism, and are credited with the composition of many hymns and verses in the ancient Hindu scriptures known as the Vedas .
